63,000 Lithium-Ion Batteries Recalled Due to Fire and Burn Hazard

SKIL LI-ION BATTERY

Chervon North America has issued a recall for approximately 63,000 SKIL 40V 5.0Ah Lithium-Ion Batteries due to overheating risks that could pose fire and burn hazards.

The recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on December 19, 2024, involves batteries manufactured before May 1, 2021, and sold under the model number BY8708-00.

The affected SKIL batteries, with the printed names “SKIL” and “PWRCORE 40,” were sold individually and as part of combo kits with SKIL 40V brushless push mowers and self-propelled mowers, although the mowers themselves are not affected by the recall.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the company has received 100 reports of thermal events related to the affected batteries, including overheating, melting, smoking, and fires.

Among these incidents, eight reports mention minor burns and smoke inhalation, while 49 cases involved property damage.

The affected batteries were sold at Lowe’s, Amazon, Walmart, and other hardware stores from October 2019 through December 2024. They were priced around $170 when sold individually and $400 when sold as part of a combination kit with the SKIL lawnmowers.

The recall also affects approximately 359 units sold in Canada.

Consumers who purchased the recalled batteries should immediately stop using them and contact Chervon North America for a free replacement or a refund.

To return the recalled battery, consumers will receive a battery collection kit from Chervon once they register for the recall online. The company will provide the remedy upon receipt of the returned battery.

How to Identify the Recalled Batteries

The recalled batteries can be identified by the model number BY8708-00 and a manufacturing date code, which is the first three digits of the 9-digit serial number located on the top of the battery pack near the terminals. Only the battery, not the mowers, is part of the recall.
