Pork and Beef Bologna Sausages Recalled Due to Misbranding, Undeclared Allergen

Ralph’s Packing Company, a Perkins-based meat producer, is recalling approximately 3,132 pounds of ready-to-eat pork and beef garlic bologna products due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall yesterday Dec. 20, 2024, stating that the products may contain milk, a known allergen, which is not listed on the product label.

The recalled bologna items, produced since September 2022, include both regular and jalapeno-flavored varieties. The specific products subject to recall are:

  • 16-oz. (1 lb) or larger vacuum-sealed chubs of Ralph’s CIRCLE R BRAND GARLIC BOLOGNA with lot codes: 0093, 0654, 0804, 1074, 1153, 1224, 1374, 1774, 1924, 2572, 2974, 3132, and 3483.
  • 16-oz. (1 lb) or larger vacuum-sealed chubs of Ralph’s CIRCLE R BRAND GARLIC BOLOGNA with Jalapenos with lot codes: 0804, 1074, 1224, 1233, 1354, 2184, and 3374.

These products bear the establishment number “EST. 51557” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The bologna was distributed to retail and food service locations in Oklahoma, with some products possibly sold sliced at retail deli counters.

The issue came to light when Ralph’s Packing notified FSIS that the product labels did not include milk, even though it is an ingredient in the bologna. Milk is a known allergen and its omission from the label could pose a risk to consumers with dairy allergies or sensitivities.

While no adverse reactions have been reported, FSIS is urging consumers who have purchased the affected products to dispose of them immediately or return them to the point of purchase.

Food service establishments are also advised not to serve the products.

FSIS is concerned that some of the recalled bologna may still be in refrigerators or freezers at consumers’ homes or in food service establishments.

To verify the recall’s effectiveness, FSIS will conduct checks to ensure that recalling firms properly notify customers and take steps to ensure that the products are no longer available for sale.
