Sig Sauer Inc., a prominent firearms manufacturer, has issued a recall for approximately 230,000 units of its ROMEO5 Red Dot Sights due to a potentially serious safety hazard. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall on January 8, 2025, urging consumers to stop using the affected sights immediately.
The recall stems from a violation of federal safety regulations regarding button cell batteries, which can be easily accessed in the recalled products.
These batteries pose an ingestion risk to children, which can lead to severe internal injuries, chemical burns, or even death.
The products also lack the required child-resistant packaging and safety warnings mandated by Reese’s Law.
Product Details
The recall affects SIG SAUER ROMEO5 Red Dot Sights, specifically models SOR52001 and 7400579, and model SORJ53101 that includes the sight as a part.
The devices are labeled with the SIG SAUER logo and the ROMEO5 name on one side. Consumers can identify the recalled units by checking the serial number on the bottom of the sight.
Units with serial numbers ending in the letter “K” or “M” are part of this recall.
The sights are primarily used as aiming devices for firearms, sold in black and packaged with a CR2032 button cell battery.
They were available for purchase at major retailers, including Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Academy Sports, and Scheels.
Additionally, they were sold through independent firearms dealers and popular online platforms such as Amazon.com, Opticsplanet.com, and Midwayusa.com from February 2023 to December 2024, with prices ranging between $130 and $200.
Hazard Details and Remedy
Although no injuries or incidents have been reported, the CPSC emphasizes the risk of battery ingestion by children.
When swallowed, button cell batteries can cause catastrophic damage within hours, underscoring the urgency of the recall.
Sig Sauer urges consumers to discontinue use immediately and contact the company for a free recall kit. The kit includes a replacement cap with the necessary safety labeling and an updated instruction manual.
Consumers will need to submit a picture of the serial number to receive the kit. Instructions on how to locate and document the serial number will be provided by Sig Sauer.
For further assistance, consumers can reach Sig Sauer by calling their customer service line at 603-610-3000 (collect) between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.
Alternatively, they can send an email to ROMEO5Recall@sigsauer.com or visit the company’s safety center at https://www.sigsauer.com/safety-center.
Consumers are advised to handle the button cell batteries with care and follow local hazardous waste disposal procedures to prevent accidental ingestion.
