Gillig, LLC has announced a recall of a limited number of diesel-hybrid transit buses due to a critical issue with the vehicles’ odometers. The recall affects 9 buses, all of which are 2023-2023 model GILLIG Low Floor buses. The vehicles were produced between May 5 and September 13, 2023, and fall within the VIN range of 15GGB3012P3198777 to 15GGB3015P3199423 (not sequential).
The problem centers on a faulty speedometer gauge that prevents accurate mileage accumulation on the driver’s dash odometer while the bus is operating in full electric vehicle (EV) mode, specifically in the “Depot” mode, where the diesel engine is not running. This issue can result in the failure of the odometer to display mileage during these operations.
Safety Risks and Potential Consequences
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the failure to properly register mileage can lead to an underestimation of the total distance the bus has traveled. This, in turn, could delay scheduled vehicle maintenance, which may impair the safe operation of the buses and increase the risk of a crash.
While there are no immediate warnings to the driver during EV mode, the absence of mileage accumulation is a significant safety concern, as it could lead to critical maintenance tasks being missed.
Gillig became aware of the issue in November 2024, and the company’s Safety Committee decided to initiate the recall on December 4, 2024. All affected buses will be corrected at no cost to the vehicle owners. The remedy involves replacing the faulty speedometer gauge with a new one capable of correctly logging vehicle mileage in all operating modes.
Notably, buses built after September 13, 2023, are not affected by this issue, as the company implemented factory containment to address the problem.
The recall will officially begin with owner notifications scheduled for January 15, 2025. Owners of the affected buses will receive detailed instructions on how to proceed. Since Gillig does not operate through a dealer network, no dealer notifications will be required for this recall.
