In a major recall announcement, Stanley, the popular outdoor gear manufacturer, is recalling approximately 2.6 million units of its Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs due to a significant safety hazard.
The affected mugs, which were sold in a variety of sizes and colors, have been linked to detaching lids that could result in burns.
The recall affects both the Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs sold between June 2016 and December 2024. These double-walled, stainless steel mugs, available in sizes ranging from 12 oz to 20 oz, were sold in popular retail outlets, including Amazon, Walmart, Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and others across the U.S.
The mugs, which feature a polypropylene lid and bear the Stanley logo, come in several colors, including black, white, and green.
The main issue with the affected mugs lies in the polypropylene lids, which are prone to shrinking when exposed to heat and torque. This causes the lid to detach unexpectedly during use, posing a burn hazard to consumers.
The recall was issued after Stanley received 91 reports worldwide, including 16 reports in the U.S., of the mugs’ lids detaching. These incidents have led to 38 reported burn injuries, with two of those injuries occurring in the United States.
In total, 11 consumers worldwide required medical attention as a result of these incidents.
