Nationwide recall of the supplement affects consumers who may be unknowingly ingesting Metformin and Glyburide.
Shoppers-Plaza, a health and wellness retailer, has announced a voluntary nationwide recall of all lots of its Fouzee SugarLin Herbal Formula capsules after it was discovered that the product contains two undeclared prescription medications: Metformin and Glyburide.
The recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Fouzee SugarLin Herbal Formula, marketed as a dietary supplement for blood sugar support, was sold widely across various online platforms, including the company’s own website, www.shoppers-plaza.com, and potentially in some retail stores.
The product, which comes in white bottles containing 180 vegetable capsules, is sold under the brand name “Fouzee” and bears the UPC code 26656690477.
Health Risks from Undeclared Ingredients
Both Metformin and Glyburide are active ingredients in several FDA-approved prescription medications used to treat type 2 diabetes. However, neither drug is approved for inclusion in an over-the-counter supplement.
The presence of these drugs in Fouzee SugarLin Herbal Formula poses serious health risks to consumers, particularly those who may be unaware of the inclusion of prescription drugs in the product.
Metformin, known for its role in managing type 2 diabetes, can lead to lactic acidosis, a potentially fatal condition where lactic acid builds up in the bloodstream. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, rapid breathing, and abdominal pain.
If left untreated, lactic acidosis can lead to death.
Additionally, when combined with other medications, Metformin can cause hypoglycemia, a dangerous drop in blood sugar.
The second undeclared medication in the supplement, Glyburide, also works to lower blood sugar levels, but it can cause severe hypoglycemia, particularly when taken without medical supervision.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia include dizziness, confusion, rapid heartbeat, and in severe cases, seizures, coma, or death.
What Consumers Should Do
Shoppers-Plaza is urging all consumers who have purchased the Fouzee SugarLin Herbal Formula to immediately stop using the product and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. The company is notifying customers via email, through its website, and on social media platforms to ensure that all affected consumers are reached.
As advised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), consumers who have experienced any adverse effects related to the product are advised to consult with a healthcare provider as soon as possible.
Symptoms of Metformin-related lactic acidosis or Glyburide-induced hypoglycemia should be taken seriously and addressed immediately.
